Period panties have been fastidiously gaining traction globally and in Sri Lanka there has been a rapid growth in the variety of products available in the market. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s out there.
Looking for period pants in Sri Lanka? Want to know about the quality of the local brands like to compare against some bigger stores like pharmacies as well as some of the great Indian brands that deliver to Sri Lanka? Well it’s all here in a no holds barred honest review of all the pants and briefs I could find.
What Are Period Panties?
Period panties, also known as menstrual underwear or period underwear, are absorbent garments worn to collect menstrual flow as a standalone product or in conjunction with other products such as reusable or disposable menstrual products. Period panties are part of the menstrual hygiene category of reusable absorbent garments and offer a sustainable alternative to disposable pads and tampons.
Reusuable period pants have multiple layers of absorbency within them, holding from 10ml to 40ml of liquid which is the equivalent of 2-8 conventional tampons. Reusuable period pants also have an outer layer that is moisture-repistant or leak proof. There has been a huge progression with the comfort and the look of reusuable nappies/period pants, they look and feel similar to your normal underwear.
They are washable and reusable for up to 2 years, making them an affordable long-term solution. For Sri Lankan women faced with a hot and sticky climate, the inconvenience of having to search for products in stores in cities other than Colombo, and the generally unspoken topic of general and menstrual hygiene, the use of period panties is a solution.
Benefits of Period Panties for Sri Lankan Women
In the tropical country of Sri Lanka, where the sun always shines, managing your menstruation with traditional disposable sanitary products can be tricky. The heat and moisture trapped between your body and your disposable sanitary products can cause irritation and create perfect breeding ground for bacteria and rashes. Fortunately, the days of awkward and uncomfortable use of traditional disposable sanitary products are over with the arrival of period panties – now you can say goodbye to sticky, irritating sanitary products and hello to breathable comfort made with organic cotton and bamboo.
Health wise, the CDC guidelines on menstrual products state that reusable products do not pose a risk for Toxic Shock Syndrome unlike tampons. Many textile medical journals have written about the antimicrobial properties of reusable fabrics including period panties made with fabrics treated with silver ions, that have comparable hygiene to disposable products when washed properly. A Lancet regional health study found that 23% of women in Sri Lanka experienced heavy flow which is why many women would require high-absorbency period panties. Some high quality reusable products can absorb up to 40ml of fluid.
The practical advantages for Sri Lankan women include:
In addition to our range of insect repellent treated clothing, our breathable fabrics will keep your child at a comfortable temperature, preventing heat rash and skin irritation in hot & humid climates.
Reusable pad means no more disposable pads! You can keep reusing the same pad until you want to.
Fabrics treated with antimicrobials offer the same level of hygiene as disposables provided the fabrics are properly maintained and cared for.
These styles create a comfortable base that is hard to notice under clothing.
Apa yang tidak Dikenal? (What’s Unknown?) – Mikroplastik & E Steroid
Users report long-term savings of around 50% as opposed to the continuous expense of using disposable community equipment.

For best results, choose a size based on your hip measurement rather than your regular panty size, as historical sizes can deviate greatly from current street sizes. Healthfab and Mahina both provide size charts to help you select the correct size.
After use, simply rinse in cold water to remove any remaining menstrual fluid and then machine wash at 40 degrees Celsius with a gentle detergent. Once washed, dry thoroughly before storage. Do not wear re-usable sanitary products for longer than intended - this will reduce any transfer of odour or bacteria to the panty. DO NOT USE FABRIC SOFTENER - these products leave a coating on fabrics which impede the performance of absorbent materials. We advise against tumble drying as the high heat could damage the special leak proof layer. By following a few simple guidelines your product will continue to function as intended wash after wash.
Safety, Risks, and Considerations
Period panties are safe for most women to wear during their period; however, there are some special cases where they may not be the best option.
If you have a known latex allergy it may be worth checking the elastic composition of a particular style before we post. Some styles contain latex in the elastic of the waistband or leg openings. This information is generally stated on the product page or packaging of most brands.
You can wear these for 4 to 8 hours depending on your flow. Any more than that and they will become very difficult to wash thoroughly and smell very badly. Women with very heavy flows may choose to stay on the higher end of this range but with an additional form of protection as well.
Most people think that reusable menstrual products aren’t hygienic but this is an old urban legend that has been passed down for years. Modern antimicrobial fabrics found in quality period panties are as, or more, hygienic than disposable menstrual products. As long as the fabric is washed correctly and properly maintained reusable menstrual products can be as, or more, hygienic than disposable menstrual products. At Healthfab we use silver ion treated fabrics that outperform regular fabrics in odour control and bacterial growth.
A very important note: Period panties are NOT a substitute for medical attention if you suspect you have a gynecological issue or abnormal bleeding. However, high absorbency period pants are NOT for use if your flow exceeds their absorption capacity in under 4 hours.
Sri Lanka Context: Climate, Culture, and Availability
Due to the weather Sri Lanka has, many ladies who use synthetic pads suffer from rashes and itching because of the moisture trapped on their skin. They also suffer from fungal growth as well. Period panties are a great option to allow your skin to breathe naturally. No more than unlike most disposable products currently available on the market, they do not trap moisture on your skin allowing for the skin to breathe naturally. Also unlike most products currently available on the market to manage, they are made from non irritative, organic, natural and sustainable materials. So when you decide to get a pair of our period panties you will be saving yourself from so many discomforts and be able to live life freely.
For many of the women we work with in Sri Lanka, discreetness is key when it comes to managing menstrual hygiene. Many of our products have a seamless construction and provide close-fitting, wear all day comfort. We find that our pad liners do not create the bulk that many ladies associate with thick products and are easy to wear under everything from yoga wear to school uniforms or a saree.
For accessibility, availability was the biggest challenge. This has significantly addressed in Colombo and other main cities through online shopping and ordering for products. You can find a wide range of local and international products online on websites like Period.lk, smoobie.lk, etc. Online pharmacy websites like https://www.alleghenypharmacy.com/ and more like these also deliver products online to Sri Lanka and these products can be delivered to your doorstep. While there are very few places where you can physically find these products (aside from basic options like Floren at Union Chemists locations), online shopping for these products opens up a world of options for women who live in rural areas or small towns where these products are not available and these products can help these women achieve a more comfortable and healthier way of managing their menstruation.

Period panties are a great addition to anyone’s wardrobe but some types of people will find them more useful than others.
For young women on a monthly product budget, the long-term savings of using reusable period panties is approximately 50%. For women on-the-go to school or university, the high-absorbency pair gives you that peace of mind without the hassle of having to empty and wash out so often.

While ultimately your teen girl may choose to move on to using tampons or a menstrual cup, incorporating period panties into lessons with mom about periods has value. Girls are already accustomed to wearing underwear.

For those who are looking at the eco friendliness, climate performance and durability of products, there are quite a few Indian brands available on Period.lk. For those who have a heavy flow and need something that can keep up all day, I would say the Healthfab options from Indian brand Organic Baby Delights are top notch. Although not entirely organic, they are made of natural materials that feel gentle against my skin and I can assure you that they last 12 hours without a single leak! Here in Colombo, with the hot and humid weather, that is a pretty big deal.
The Mahina product pictured above is also from Indian brand Organic Baby Delights and it’s hands down the most skin friendly organic cotton product I have tried.
For those on a low budget, Floren from Union Chemists is a good first product, but not as good on the heavier days. Smoobie is the strongest local product in terms of quality and the cotton blend is suitable for the Sri Lankan climate. Please check size of this product before purchasing as size of products has been inconsistent. However based on pattern of feedback on r/TwoXAsia and other local menstrual products forums, Indian reusable products tend to last longer than local generics. From first hand experience I have multiple products that have lasted 2 years or more. Local generics have lasted no more than 6 months before losing absorbency.
Where Can Sri Lankan Women Find Period Panties?
You can find plenty of online shops in Sri Lanka which offer period panties but in physical shops like super markets and department stores you can find them in places like large pharmacy chains like pharmacies. Online shop Period.lk offers a huge collection of Indian brands such as Healthfab, Mahina, Fabpad, Nushu Care and Carmesi. Though from our research you can find period panties from these brands in shops like these, none of them have offered the same range of products at such great quality as period.lk does. From the brands that we sell here, Floren is available at Union Chemists Pharmacy, making it the best option for those who like to see the product first or require it urgently and need it on the same day.
Also you can find other online stores which sells variety of products. Smoobie.lk is good place to buy local products and products related to local culture. You can also find products and stuff related to feminine hygiene at Femme-care.com. For generic imports you can try Daraz.lk, but the delivery time is not guaranteed. For other imports you can try Kapruka.com or Littlemiss.lk. Online stores like Glomark.lk/Spar2u.lk stocks on variety of products including products related to feminine hygiene along with their grocery range available at their locations. There is also Fpasrilanka.org (Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka) that sells some eco options, but not too many. For women living outside Colombo, shopping online on a platform which specialises in such products would be the best option.
Key Takeaways
When it comes to period wear in Sri Lanka, period panties are a clinically proven, comfortable solution for women. Having antimicrobial treated fabrics in a quality product, that rivals that of disposable hygiene products in terms of care and hygiene, gives women in Sri Lanka real options. They can opt for breathable fabrics such as organic cotton and bamboo that thrive in our tropical climate from Indian brands like Cosy cotton, Saanvi, Lilys bunkum, Daughters of Maha vishnu, Organic cotton co and more. They have a real selection within our local market from the pharmacy brand Floren to long-wear performers like Healthfab and Mahina. And from feedback of the local community who use these Indian reusable brands for menstrual solutions, it is clear that Indian brands offer better value in terms of durability as opposed to generic local products that copy packaging and design. Not only do they offer better quality products but also savings in the long run. Check out our ‘Favourite Products for Heavy Flow’, ‘Best for Sensitive Skin’ and ‘Cool Weather’ feature to find the best product for you! Healthfab and Fabpad took the lead for heavy flow, Mahina and Nushu Care for sensitive skin and climate comfort! For those outside of Colombo, it is usually easier to purchase products online rather than coming to Colombo to look for places to buy reusable menstrual products. While there are a few brands available online that sell these products, there are currently no dedicated venues outside of Colombo where these products and related materials can be purchased. That is until now – while we don’t have a dedicated outlet in other parts of Sri Lanka yet, all these products and specialised range of products can be purchased online on Period.lk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are period panties hygienic and safe to use?
A washed period pantie is as clean as a disposable product. Research has shown that antimicrobial fabrics (including products with silver ions) provide the same levels of hygiene as Healthfab products. Wash in cold water after use and then with your other clothes at 40 degrees celsius. Do not use fabric softener as this can reduce effectiveness of fabric. Check product for latex in elastic if you have a latex allergy.
Yes, you are able to purchase online from stores outside of Colombo, Sri Lanka.
For now Floren is only available offline in Colombo, although some quality brands are carried at Union Chemists Pharmacy locations around the country. However, many brands are available through online ordering at Period.lk with islandwide delivery to cities and towns all over the country, making her probably the best option for women living outside of Colombo.
What’s the difference between Period Panties and pads & tampons? Period panties are part of the reusable solution for dealing with menstruation.
Our period panties hold as much liquid or more than standard disposable pads and come with an option for heavy flow holding up to 40ml or 8 tampon equivalents. Unlike a lot of disposable pads our period underwear do not contain any SAP gel which is made from synthetic materials and have no plastic backing which can irritate and be especially uncomfortable in humid climates such as Sri Lanka. However unlike many disposable pads our eco-friendly solution do need to be washed after wear. However many customers have reported feeling more comfortable when wearing our underwear than a standard disposable pad. Although the initial investment may be higher, period pants are more economical in the long run as you no longer require to continuously purchase pads month after month.
